The AI Website Choice: DIY, Template, Custom, or Expert-Led?
A practical guide to choosing a website model that matches your business, not just the fastest way to get a page online.

At an event this week, I saw a lot of websites that had clearly been built fast.
They worked. They had a hero section, some services, a button, a contact form. But many gave the same impression: a business had bought a website without deciding what it needed to say, prove, or make easy.
That is not an argument against AI. It is an argument against confusing a fast starting point with a finished business asset.
There is no universally best way to build a website. An AI builder can be exactly right for one business. A template can be exactly right for another. A fully custom build can be necessary for a third. But when a business needs to look credible, distinct, and ready to be chosen, the decision has to include more than the tool.
It has to include responsibility.
Why can a website be live and still make a business look generic?
A website can be technically complete while commercially unfinished.
The difference is rarely one trendy effect or one perfect shade of purple. It is whether the site makes the business understandable. Can a visitor quickly see who it is for, why it is credible, what makes it different, and what to do next? Does the design support that answer or make the visitor work for it?
Frequently asked questions

Is an AI-built website automatically bad for a small business?
No. An AI-built site can be useful, functional, and appropriate. The question is whether the brief, review process, message, design, and quality checks match what the business needs. AI is a tool; it does not determine the quality of the decisions around it.
Can a template still look unique?
Yes. Templates can be substantially customized. The goal is not to make a page look unfamiliar for its own sake; it is to make the site specific to the business, its buyer, its proof, and its next step.
Why not just build a custom website from scratch?
Custom work is valuable when a business needs bespoke behavior, integrations, systems, or performance decisions. For standard needs, it can add cost and operational responsibility without creating a proportionate benefit.
Does a better-looking website guarantee more leads?
No. A stronger website can improve clarity, credibility, and usability, but it cannot guarantee rankings, inquiries, or revenue. It still needs a real offer, relevant traffic, credible proof, and a business that can deliver on the promise.
