Fitness App Design
To design a mobile application that allows users to find and book personal trainers instantly without the friction, with the options of both virtual and physical training.
March 2021 - June 2021
Finding a personal trainer is a very intimidating process. Consumers have to use the ones provided by their gym or figure out a set schedule for their personal training needs. It becomes difficult to find high quality trainers that can fit an individuals schedule.
Most research had to be conducted through secondary research. With Nowly being an innovative idea with extreme potential, the stakeholders wanted the process to be undisclosed. User interviews were not allowed to be conducted and there was no research budget. Research papers and books we’re used to emulate a similar booking process with as little friction as possible, similar to Uber and Grab.
Understanding possible users was paramount, a great amount of time was dedicated in understanding different workout patterns based on demographics and as to why people don’t use a personal trainer.
Trust
It’s hard to find a trainer that they can trust to have their best interest in mind. Many trainers don’t continue to learn once certified and don’t have all their certificates up to date.
Price
Personal trainers are expensive, gyms usually only offer them in packages that benefit the gym instead of the trainee. There’s no way that an average person can afford to have a long term personal trainer.
Enthusiasm
A lot of trainers lack enthusiasm when training. They’re usually on their phones in the middle of sessions, seem distracted and barely document their customers progress.
Specialty
Finding a trainer that specializes in a certain type of training and have a tried and tested philosophy are hard to find and can often be expensive.
One of the main goals of the app was to make the booking process as seamless and easy as possible for the users. We wanted the whole booking process to complete in less than 3 steps.
For virtual trainers, we decided to have the workout type, duration and call to action all in one screen on the homepage. This would would prompt the user to a confirmation screen, where they could verify the payment and confirm, Then the app would connect them right away to a
For physical trainers we would implement a map that shows all the trainers and locations available at the moment near the user with the bottom of the screen having a scroll to show some information on the trainers nearby. Once the user chooses the trainer they would choose their settings and confirm for a trainer. This would be prompted with the same confirmation screen where the user can just tap one more time to confirm.
Taurist was also given the task to design the logo, voice, and user interface, Check out our Nowly Branding Case Study to see more on how we chose the fonts, colors, identitiy, voice, and logo of this brand.
After the branding was completed we knew exactly what kind of colors we wanted to use, how we wanted the artwork to be, and what the theme/voice of the app experience would be like. So we began to design the interface.
We had to consider what the icons would look like, what our navigation would operate. How would we get the information accross to the users so that the app was as easy to understand as possible?
With the wireframe prepared and the UI complete it was time to put together a high fidelity prototype for the stakeholders to see. It was important to show the 2 step process of booking a virtual trainer to emphasize the benefit of this feature and the 3 step process in booking a physical trainer.
Screens have become a big part of our lives recently and with this comes the need to give users a break from the bright LED screens we carry on our pockets on a daily basis. That’s why we chose to design a “Dark version” of the app for users who prefer darker screens.
Nowly’s MVP phase is set to launch in the first quarter of 2022 with this phase allowing us to perform firsthand user testing as well as interviews. With the information gathered we aim to further develop the app and apply some real world data to the design solutions we implement.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
